About Blending Essential Oils:
For beginners it can be really hard to understand the complexity of mixing essential oils and that’s also why a lot of people just prefer buying synergy blends. (Synergy blends are formulation of a combination of different essential oils that performs a specific function, such as : energizing or stress-relieving.)
One can only become a pro in blending essential oils through starting and practicing. And since it can be difficult to understand the “notes” of all essential oils, I’ve decided to give you the method I think is the most easiest.
Blending essential oils based on their “notes” —
Essential oils can be categorized as top notes, middle notes and base notes. When you want to start blending essential oils together you want to make sure you use three essential oils, one of each ‘note’. This is the easiest method to blend essential oils, and it’s easy to blend three oils rather than blend more.
How to know which essential oil is of which note?
There are several methods. But for beginners you might not be able to understand so I have categorized some popular essential oils on the basis of their notes so that when you try out blending essential oils, it will be easier for you.
Top Notes:
Basil Essential Oil
Eucalyptus Essential Oil
Lemon Essential Oil
Peppermint Essential Oil
Bergamot Essential Oil
Spearmint Essential Oil
Sage Essential Oil
Thyme Essential Oil
Middle Notes:
Pine Essential Oil
Rosemary Essential Oil
Tea Tree Essential Oil
Clary Sage Essential Oil
Lavender Essential Oil
Chammomile Essential Oil
Base Notes:
Rose Essential Oil
Cedarwood Essential Oil
Frankincense Essential Oil
Clove Essential Oil
Patchouli Essential Oil
Rosewood Essential Oil
Sandalwood Essential Oil
Vanilla Essential Oil
Oakmoss Essential Oil
Ylang Ylang Essential Oil
Neroli Essential Oil
Myrrh Essential Oil
Jasmine Essential Oil
Note: These are not all essential oils but I tried to list as much as I can and these are definitely more popular as well.
By this time you must be wondering in what quantities should you blend the three essential oils of your choosing?
So for example if you wanted to make a stress relieving essential oil blend you would go for essential oils that offer stress relieving properties in each of the notes and after selecting three oils, one from each note, you will blend them using the “30,50 and 20 rule” So that means 3 drops of the top note oil, 5 of the middle note and 2 of the base note oil.
Mixing Essential Oils:
After putting up a blend together, it’s necessary that you let it rest for at least 24-48 hours so that it mixes well.
And tada! Your essential oil blend is ready!
You have endless possibilities while blending essential oils, so feel free to me what you’re going to be blending those essential oils for? Hair loss? Skin Care, energizer? What’s your pick?
Also, If you’re relatively new to the concept of essential oils, then I don’t want to scare you off because essential oils are great but there are times when they are not recommended, under certain medications, pregnancy, etc.
So you might want to do a quick google search, allergy test before trying out a new essential oil and even seek your doctor’s advice if you are ill and want to use essential oils.
